The Height of Skyscraper

The following concerns a question on a physics degree exam at the University of Copenhagen:

"Describe how to determine the height of a skyscraper with a barometer."

One student replied: "You tie a long piece of string to the neck of the barometer, then lower the barometer from the roof of the skyscraper to the ground. The length of the string plus the length of the barometer will equal the height of the building."

This highly original answer so incensed the examiner that the student was failed immediately. The student appealed on the grounds that his answer was indisputably correct, and the university appointed an independent arbiter to decide the case.

The arbiter judged that the answer was indeed correct, but did not display any noticeable knowledge of physics. To resolve the problem it was decided to call the student in and allow him six minutes in which to provide a verbal answer, which showed at least a minimal familiarity with the basic principles of physics.

For five minutes the student sat in silence, forehead creased in thought.

The arbiter reminded him that time was running out, to which the student replied that he had several extremely relevant answers, but couldn't make up his mind which to use.

On being advised to hurry up the student replied as follows:

"Firstly, you could take the barometer up to the roof of the skyscraper, drop it over the edge, and measure the time it takes to reach the ground. The height of the building can then be worked out from the formula H =0.5g x t squared. But bad luck on the barometer."

"Or if the sun is shining you could measure the height of the barometer, then set it on end and measure the length of its shadow. Then you measure the length of the skyscraper's shadow, and thereafter it is a simple matter of proportional arithmetic to work out the height of the skyscraper."

"But if you wanted to be highly scientific about it, you could tie a short piece of string to the barometer and swing it like a pendulum, first at ground level and then on the roof of the skyscraper. The height is worked out by the difference in the gravitational restoring force T = 2 pi sq. root (l/g)."

"Or if the skyscraper has an outside emergency staircase, it would be easier to walk up it and mark off the height of the skyscraper in barometer lengths, then add them up."

The arbiter accepted all answers and asked the student that you must be knowing what the professor was expecting?
The student replied,  yes I do,  but I hate others to decide what way I should think.

The student was Niels Bohr, the only Dane ever to win the Nobel Prize for Physics.!

Why do we have brakes in a Car?

Why do we have brakes in a Car?
Answer will blow your mind...

Someone asked, "Why do we have brakes in a car"?

Varied answers were received, like,
"To stop",
"To reduce speed",
"To avoid collision" etc.,

but the best answer was,
"To enable you to drive faster"

Give it a thought. It's true but seldom such smart out of box thinking is done,  much less appreciated.

It's because of brakes that we can dare to accelerate, dare to go fast and reach destinations we desire.

At various points in life, we find our parents, teachers, mentors, friends and spouse etc. questioning your progress, direction or decision. We consider them as irritants or consider such inquiries as "brakes" to our ongoing work.

But, remember, it's because of such questions (read periodical brakes) that you have managed to reach where you are today. Without brakes, you could have skid, lost direction or gone astray or met with an unfortunate accident  !!!.

Learn to appreciate the 'brakes' in your life.
Use them wisely....

The Angry Monster

The Angry Monster In Me

Sometimes I do not get to do what I want.

Mommy, Daddy, my teacher or another adult often tell me what I should do.

Sometimes I can get really mad when I am told to do something I don’t want to do.

I may want to play 5 more minutes.

I may want something else to eat.

I may want to do something I am told I can not do.

When I am told I can’t do what I want I can get mad.

When I get mad I may start to growl.

When I get mad I may try to kick, hit or bite the person who is making me mad.

The feelings I have inside my body are really strong.

When I get really mad it is like I am an Angry Monster.

It is okay to be mad. Everybody gets mad sometimes.

But it is not okay to hurt anyone when I am mad.

Mommy, daddy, my teachers and other adults don’t hit each other when they get mad.

When I get mad there are several things I can try to do.

I can tell the adult I am with that I am mad.

I can jump up and down.

I can turn my arms into spaghetti.

If I am home I can go to my room and listen to my music.

I can go lay down in my sleeping bag and hide.

I can hit or kick or wrestle with my soft pillow.

I can ask for a really tight hug or to be rocked.

Finally, I can take a big breath, hold it, count to 10 and let it out slowly.

There are many people in my life who love me and want to help me control my anger.

I need to try really hard to notice when I am getting mad and chase the Angry Monster away.

Peace of Mind

Once Buddha was traveling with a few of his followers.

While they were passing a lake, Buddha told one of his disciples,
"I am thirsty.
Do get me some water from the lake."

The disciple walked up to the lake.

At that moment,
a bullock cart started crossing through the lake.
As a result,
The water became very muddy and turbid.

The disciple thought,
"How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?"

So he came back and told Buddha,
"The water in there is very muddy.
I don't think it is fit to drink."

After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back
to the lake.

The disciple went back,
and found that the water was still muddy.

He returned and informed Buddha about the same.

After sometime,
again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back.

This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the water was clean and clear.

So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said,
"See what you did to make the water clean.
You let it be,
and the mud settled down on its own,
and you have clear water."

Your mind is like that too ! When it is disturbed,
just let it be.
Give it a little time.
It will settle down on its own.

You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down.
It will happen.
It is effortless."

Having 'Peace of Mind' is not a strenuous job,

it is an effortless process๐Ÿ‘Œso keep your mind cool and have a great life ahead...

Imaginary Rope

A farmer was taking three of his donkeys for sale to the market.
On the way he saw a river and decided to have a dip.
Since he had only two ropes to tie the donkeys to a tree, he looked around wondering how to tie  the third one.
He saw a sage and sought his help if he could give him a rope to tie the third donkey. The sage did not have a rope but had a suggestion.
He told the farmer, “let the third donkey see you tying the other two donkeys to a tree.  Then you pretend to tie this one also”.
The farmer did as he was told and went for a dip in the river. Coming back, he thanked the sage and saw that the donkeys stood exactly at the same spot where he had left them.
He untied the two donkeys and patted the third one to start moving. After going a little distance, imagine his surprise when the third donkey stood still at the same spot.
Cajoling, kicking or talking did not help with the donkey, refusing to move from the spot. The farmer went back to sage, who told him, “untie the third donkey”.
“But”, protested the farmer, “I have not tied him”. The sage asked, “You know it. But does the donkey know that?”
Sure enough the farmer went back and pretended to untie the donkey. The donkey moved immediately as though released and walked over to join the other two donkeys.

Moral of the story :
We are all, also tied up by too many  imaginary ropes…… which are really non-existent. The only truth is there are no boundaries in real life and anyone can stretch to any extent. Don’t we all see records being broken, every time, everywhere and every day?
Our mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except with our permission. Hence before beginning this day let us see what we can do with our minds.

Lesson to Learn

That freaking last over was a neat set of  life lessons. Here is how:

Bangladesh needs 11 runs in last over. Over a billion people are on edge with their asses on cusp of dis pair or joy.

1.  Pandya goes for 2  fours in first 3 balls. At this point game is over for India. But Pandya still keeps his head to ball some what sensibly for last 3 balls.

Life Lesson 1- It is never lost until you lose it. Even if defeat is  staring at your face.

2 . Mushfiqur hits second four in last over and punches in air. Just 2 runs needed  in 3 balls. So they have won he thinks. The Bangla dugout stands clapping. Wrong assumption.

Life Lesson 2- Never  count your chickens until they are hatched. Really hatched.

3. Two runs needed in last ball. A billion people watching are trembling with nerves. Dhoni remains  cool showing no emotion. In the melee of last ball when billion
minds have raced to confusion, he has sense to not throw the ball and run the batsman out. He knows he has won , yet he doesn't jump into air or punches his fist.

Life Lesson 3- Equanimity and dispassion is key to master one's mind.  No excessive joy in good time and no excessive sorrow in unfavorable times is how one should live.

4. One freak hit and  Bangladesh could have won. One run in last over and it could have been a tie. Anything was possible like a random chance at toss of dice.

Life Lesson 4: There is an overall seeming randomness in life. In end you lose some and you win some by an unknown roll of dice.

Be positive. Learn form each and every situations...
